Protecting America’s borders
Although Missouri’s not a border state, Claire understands the importance of protecting American jobs and our national security from those who enter our country illegally. In addition to calling for the prosecution of employers who knowingly hire illegal workers, Claire’s fought for greater security measures along our country’s border with Mexico.

Accomplishments
Pressuring the Bush and Obama Administrations to prosecute employers who knowingly hire illegal workers
Claire has consistently supported efforts to crackdown on employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers and pushed both President Bush and President Obama’s administration to be tougher on these lawbreakers. During confirmation hearings in 2009, Claire:
- Confronted two high-ranking Obama administration officials about the need to prosecute employers who ignore immigration laws; and,
- Pressured the Department of Homeland Security to devote additional resources that support efforts to crack down on employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers.
Strengthening protections along America’s border with Mexico
In 2010, Claire cosponsored deficit-neutral legislation to invest $600 million toward securing the Mexican border. Claire’s bill became law just one week after it passed the Senate and provided funding for the following critical security measures:
- $254 million for additional border personnel
- $14 million for communications equipment
- $32 million for unmanned aerial vehicle surveillance on the border
- $6 million to deploy forward-operating bases along the border
- $80 million for Immigration and Customs Enforcement
- $214 million for additional justice and judicial capabilities
Cracking down on border tunnels
Claire joined a bipartisan group of Senators in 2011 to introduce legislation that cracks down on the construction of illegal tunnels along the Mexican border. After the bill received unanimous support from the Senate, the legislation:
- Made it more difficult for drug cartels and other criminal organizations to smuggle drugs, guns, and people into the country; and,
- Increased penalties for those who construct or finance illegal border tunnels.
